University cafes and hospitality service get environmental accreditation

The SRA accreditation the latest result of work by Compass, the Facilities Management team and other parts of the University to reduce the environmental impact of its food.

With 8,000 member sites in the UK, the SRA aim to assess the sustainability of every part of a food service business. They have awarded the Compass ‘Occasions’ hospitality operations the highest possible award of three stars, while all ‘Beyond Ordinary’ departmental cafes have been awarded two stars.

The accreditation assesses a number of key areas including where food is sourced from, the operation’s impact on society and improvements to its environmental footprint from using less energy, reducing food waste and recycling. A detailed report has been produced for every café which celebrates the good work which has been done and provides a useful benchmark for further improvements. The accreditation will be formally re-assessed every two years, but the team will be reviewing progress annually.
